Ukitake was born the oldest child of eight into a family of lower nobility. Their financial situation easily allowed them to bring up six boys and two girls, but it could not buy them the health of their oldest. At the age of three Ukitake fell ill with tuberculosis, by the age of six the illness had proceeded far enough that doctors had given him up. But against all odds he lived. His hair had turned white though, probably as a result of all the different cures that had been tried out.

He soon started to downplay his true condition because he did not like the grave atmosphere of everybody worrying about him, he did not want his siblings to be neglected attention, either. He early on learned a lot about his disease and how to care for himself.
Being forced to stay in the hospital for long times he grew to love all kinds of books which also gave him his first glimpse of magic. Because of the hardship of his disease he matured fast but still managed to preserve an easy smile and optimistic nature.

When his parents died in an accident as he was thirteen, he was determined to take care of his siblings. Relatives helped them and they were supported financially, but it was still a different life. As it was quite impossible to take care of his smallest sister and brothers without being very close to them, they were taken to live with their aunt in fear of them catching their brother's disease. He was able to stay with the rest of his siblings though, promising to make sure they would be examined regularly and that he would keep all physical contact as small as possible.

Jyuushirou had been taught at home before, now, not able anymore to effort a tutor he simply proceeded to study on his own, emerging himself more and more in books about magic and history. He was talented enough to teach himself some really simple enchantments as well. He kept the house and arranged “his family's” daily life, being there whenever any of his siblings needed him. Under the strain, though, his condition worsened again. He received an invitation from the BFMI at that point, which he first declined, for it would have meant leaving his family behind. Eventually though, realizing that he was not strong enough to care for them at that point, he finally gave in.

He had to enter the hospital again, but this time, as impossible as it seemed after more than ten years, he was finally healed of TB, but his body and immune system had been damaged severely. Still, at least he would be able to live out his social nature now without endangering the people around him.

He entered the BFMI at the age of fifteen. He had no problem to get contact to the other pupils and made friends easily, the closest being Kyouraku Shunsui. A man as outgoing as Ukitake himself, even if in a quite different way, the two were soon inseparable.
A year later, one of his brothers came down with the same disease Jyuushirou had carried for so long and died another two years later. After that, Ukitake, blaming himself, buried the dream of reuniting their family after his time in the BF.

Due to his high magical talent Ukitake managed to graduate in the regular time with perfect grades even though he was absent a lot due to his weak condition. He spent his two years for the BF as a historian and researcher which also meant several visits to Europe. But as much as he liked that work, he did not put up well with the stress of traveling much. Wanting to care for others and to have contact with people he made the chose to become a teacher for the BFMI and finally started in this occupation at the age of twenty five. He's been in the institute ever since then, having also taught many of the today's teachers like that.
